In a major boost towards the development of Rugby in Uganda, Stanbic Bank has inked a UGX 50 million sponsorship package with The Black Pirates a local rugby power house.
This is in line with the bank’s focus on supporting and mentoring the youth so they can become leaders and build a better tomorrow.
Speaking at a media briefing this afternoon, Stanbic Bank Senior Marketing Manager Sonia Karamagi said, “As a bank, we are committed to developing young talent with future leadership potential to accelerate career growth. The Black Pirates have done a commendable job in the Rugby sport and have been on the rise since 2015. The teams have shown admirable resilience. Our support goes towards uplifting the youth and we know that the average age of the players is 24 years.”
The sponsorship is for a 3 year period from September 2018 to September 2021 and the money is going towards meeting the running costs of the team like allowances, medical, utilities and some of it towards the support of those that are still in school.
“At Stanbic, we appreciate the role of sports in unifying society but also its role in developing the youth. We aim to attract and retain smart, independent thinkers who are focused, tenacious, energetic and innovative. We believe the youth can drive Uganda’s growth story if equipped with the right skills and support. The Black Pirates are a force to reckon with and are therefore a right pick. We have secured kits for the players which we are very proud to unveil today,” she added.
The Club’s Chairman Edmond Owor said, “Our trajectory over the past four years has been nothing short of phenomenal culminating in winning the 2017/18 league, and a clean sweep of all available local honors, including the National 7s Series, 2017/2018 Uganda Cup trophy, all this against older more established and financially bigger clubs. This sponsorship from Stanbic will go a long way in ensuring our performance continues to shine in leaps and bounds.”
Black Pirates Rugby Club (BPRC) was formed 22years ago, in 1996 by six university graduates who wanted to make a positive contribution to the depth and quality of the local rugby league. Today, the Club boasts of 4 teams made up of an exciting blend of youthful and lofty ambitious talent.
