Uganda is currently experiencing the second wave of Covid-19 where numbers reached record highs of 1,735 new cases per day. As at 19th July 2021 the Ministry of Health reported 90,656 cumulative Covid-19 cases with 265 new cases that day, a notable reduction since the president announced the 42-day lock down.
Nonetheless, Uganda’s economy has been negatively impacted with the World Bank reporting household incomes to have reduced because businesses closed and jobs were lost, particularly in the urban informal sector. Uganda’s Gross Domestic Product contracted by 1.1 percent in 2020. On the other hand, the economy is estimated to show signs of recovery by 3.3 percent during the fiscal year 2021. However, the economic state remains in a negative state due to Covid-19.
Though there are signs of improvement, looking at trends from numerous countries that are now going through the third wave, it is important for Ugandans to remain vigilant towards the fight against Covid-19 by continuously following standard operational procedures (SOP) one main one being wearing masks. Therefore, UAP OLD MUTUAL has joined the Nakawa District SAMBA Corona Campaign and has donated masks worth 10,000,000 UGX that will be distributed to the Nakawa community. UAP OLD MUTUAL has been active in the fight against Covid-19 through various initiatives and donations.
Speaking during the campaign kickoff, Caroline Owomuhangi the Marketing and Communications Specialist of UAP OLD Mutual stated that the company aims to improve the lives of communities and will continue to carry out initiatives in line with the fight against Covid-19. She also said, ‘Our head office is right here in Nakawa and we thought it prudent to donate and support our local council.’
